Area details

Ringstead

Ringstead is a small hamlet dominated by Ringstead Bay and beach, part of the Jurassic Coast. The beach is pebble and shingle with some sand, especially at low tide with rock pools at the western end. There is a reef quite close to shore whic becomes partially revealed at low tide and the beach can be a good place to look for fossils. For those that are windsurfing from here please note the reef has no respect for fins - I have lost count the amount of times I have connected with it!

Ringstead has a long history and is noted in the Doomsday Book, but the small village mentioned there is east of the current village and now no longer exists. However, it has retained its excellent views of Weymouth and Portland and is an excellent base for walking with many options open to you including Durdle Door if you wish a longer walk.

There is a shop and cafe at Ringstead in the car park for the beach but that is as far as it goes. Part of Ringstead's charm is that fact that it is so small and out of the way. However, the Smuggler's at Osmington Mills, the next village on, is within easy walking distance along a coast path so you don't have to resort to taking to the car if you don't want to. If you do though, you are spoilt for choice in almost every direction.
